    Ruth Gledhill must be even older than Helen Thomas if she can speak authoritatively of press releases back to the Reformation. And I’m sure she wouldn’t opine about something she know nothing about.

    Tom,

    Best guess is that it is a reference to anglo-catholic and evangelical churches who say, in effect: “We want a male bishop AND we want him to have orthodox beliefs”. The House of Bishops are trying to assuage the concerns of those churches by protecting their right to both things – that their bishop be male and that their bishop have orthodox beliefs – in the Code of Practice.

    If those churches trust the hierarchy not to vary the Code of Practice in future when it suits them, then who knows? It might actually win them over.
